The Syracuse University Student Association on Monday night approved a pilot Uber partnership program and confirmed cabinet members.

SA passed a motion that effectively gives $10,000 worth of Uber rides to SU students.

The partnership between SA and Uber will last from this Friday at 5:00 p.m. to the following Sunday at noon. With a coupon code, any SU student will get a $10 coupon for an Uber ride.

SA is using this weekend as a test to determine whether a partnership with Uber would be a worthwhile investment, said SA President James Franco.

The SA fund is contributing $10,000 to the project — half from the transportation fund and half from the student advancement fund. However, if SU students spend less than that amount, SA will get the remaining money back.

SA will be distributing the Uber coupon code soon, Franco said.

Other business

The first SA meeting of the school year began with the official swearing in of James Franco as president, Angie Pati as vice president and the rest of the assembly.

Roma Amernath was elected to be the new recorder. Amernath will take minutes and roll call. The previous recorder, Drew Jacobson, is abroad.

The new cabinet members each gave a short speech to the assembly, before assembly members asked them questions. The potential cabinet members were then asked to leave the room to allow assembly discussion, during which each candidate was confirmed.

To be officially confirmed, each candidate who is presented to the assembly was interviewed and selected prior by Franco, Pati and a small committee.

Here’s who was confirmed:

  • chief of staff: Andres Laguna
  • chair of Academic Affairs: Malcolm-Ali Davis
  • chair of Student Life: Elizabeth Sedore
  • co-chair of Community Engagement: Jack Woltman
  • co-chair of Community Engagement: Jen Sweet
  • co-chair of Diversity Affairs: Khalid Khan
  • co-chair of Diversity Affairs: Diasia Robinson. Robinson served as chair of Diversity Affairs last year, which was its first year in existence.
  • public relations chair: Alexandra Dimitri
  • technology chair: Chris Yin

CORRECTION: In a previous version of this post, Malcolm-Ali Davis was misnamed. The Daily Orange regrets this error.

CLARIFICATION: In a previous version of this post, the naming process for Student Association recorder was unclear. The recorder is elected directly from the floor of assembly members.
